.: In the spring of 2002, my supervisor came up to me and inquired about creating a "portal" for the department as a vehicle to facilitate a single point log-in for the Department's online applications. At the time there were only a handful (ie 4) of application that were online. He paired me with the current Database Administer to create a goals document. The goals were simple and the plan was to the point.
.: From the start, myMIO as it was dubbed, became more than just a single point log-in. It admittedly suffered from the biggest case of "feature creep" that I have ever seen. Given full authority to let it grow and evolve from my supervisor, myMIO was programmed to become a one-stop-shop for all information pertaining to The Department of Residence Life. I had created the backend for all future web-based application development for the Department for the next 5+ years, all within 6 months.
| | .: As time advanced, so did the myMIO. myMIO was renamed myResLife when the project was launched to the public. More applications were being developed for the portal at a very accelerated rate. I soon was hiring more programmers and creating a portal development team. With the support of my supervisor, the database administer and my newly developed web-team, portal development took off even more.
.: To date the portal system has grown to over 30 applications and provided its 1000+ users access to information ranging from Departmental and University News to city-wide events. myResLife is also going through the process of becoming the official campus portal system, portalUWO. |
